The constant element within companies at different stages of their journey is the change that accompanies the growth they are experiencing. This growth could be part of a well thought of / designed strategy but it is not uncommon to see organisations scaling up due to external factors / drivers which had not necessarily been foreseen. Scaling up usually comes with challenges. How does one navigate through these challenges to make such growth achievable and sustainable? The components of the operating model is a framework that provides the user with the necessary tool to do just that. Your strategy and your customer offering are very much linked and at the foundation of this are the additional three pillars: Organisation Design & People; Technology & Data; and Processes, Procedures & Governance.
During this event we will help you understand all the components that need to be navigated within your operating model to scale up, and focus on breaking down these four pillars. We will do this by sharing ideas around challenges you have faced / are facing and discussing the ways you can address them.
Strategy
Strategic planning is crucial for business growth as it ensures resources are allocated efficiently, goals are met, and businesses remain agile in the face of change. A well-crafted strategy includes setting long-term goals, analysing the internal and external environment, and outlining the steps needed to achieve those goals. Additionally, companies that implement growth-oriented operating models and capabilities deliver significantly higher shareholder returns than their peers.
Organisation design & people
It is essential that your organisation design, including the structure, reporting relationships, and roles are aligned to your strategy and fit for the growth you plan to achieve. This might require the introduction of a level of management, structured roles and responsibilities, and/or career paths for your people. Growth is also likely to require attracting additional talent and being able to enhance your employee value proposition to achieve this will be key. Scaling up will also likely require you to set structure to activities within the employee lifecycle such as onboarding, reward, performance management, development and learning.
Technology & data
Technology and data are essential for sustainable growth and scalability in an organisation’s operating model as they help streamline operations, enhance productivity, and foster innovation. By leveraging advanced data analytics, organisations can gain insights into customer behavior, market trends, and operational efficiencies, leading to more personalisation and informed decision-making. Moreover, integrating technology and data also makes processes more agile and adaptable to external changes, supporting the strategic goals and customer offerings. During the event, we will explore how these elements can be used to overcome challenges and drive sustainable growth.
Processes, Procedures & Governance
Good governance is a key pillar to ensure that your growth strategy is accompanied by an efficient and effective internal control environment. Moreso, good governance ensures that the decisions are being taken at the right level. Having a governance framework in place will ensure that risks are being managed appropriately and decisions are being taken by considering such risks beforehand (i.e. in line with your risk appetite). As organisations grow, new activities are carried out and new people join the organisation. This naturally changes the processes within the organisation and therefore to the internal control environment. It is important that processes within the organisation are formalised and known to everyone – typically this is done through documentation of policies and procedures. Such documentation becomes even more important during a scaling up phase in order to manage change and to ensure that new controls are implemented and communicated accordingly.
