For the first time in years, the integration of Europe’s vital Single Market is receding, as shown by recent declines in the free movement of goods and services (down to 23.8% and 7.6% respectively in 2023). This backward step underscores the urgent need for a political breakthrough to safeguard the integrity and future resilience of this shared space for 450 million people and 26 million businesses. Building on the critical assessments by Enrico Letta, Mario Draghi, and Sauli Niinistö, the European Commission has responded with a new Single Market Strategy (published May 21, 2025). This plan is our chance to regain the competitiveness needed to protect the European social model, support the clean transition, and secure our strategic sovereignty and security.
