Since 2020, the world economy has experienced four major shocks: a pandemic; a spike in energy prices; elevated inflation and a rapid rise in global interest rates. Meanwhile, geopolitical issues came at the forefront, with the ongoing war in Ukraine and the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East. Despite such challenging international conditions, the Maltese economy maintained good momentum throughout 2023. Forecasts to date indicate that over the next few years the country’s economic growth is likely to outpace that in the euro area. What explains such economic resilience? Is there a risk of a sudden stop?
